Snowflakes Hitch a Ride

poster information

Description

Snowflakes hitch a ride
Like an uninvited guest
Leave my scarf dripping

I love snow. Before moving to Syracuse for graduate school, I had never experienced so much snow. Each year, the first snow always excited me. I loved that cozy feeling that you get when you come inside after being out in the cold. As you warm up, you can still see tiny snowflakes on your coat, on your scarf, in your hair. They are so pretty! In my haiku, I tried to capture that special, almost transitional, moment when you come in from the cold and watch a snowflake before it melts.

Although I spent 12 years in Syracuse, I never became cynical about snow. Now that I have moved away, snowflakes make me nostalgic for Syracuse.

This was a fun, light poem to work with. It resonated with me because my work tends to exude lightness and fun, particularly because of my interest in illustrating children's books. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of a comfortable and cozy environment to create a contrast between warm and cool in this poster. I'm from New York City, so I am used to cold winters, although not winters as snowy as they are in Syracuse. To create the cozy contrast with the cold winter in this poster, I added the story of a woman with her pets. She is taking a pause from reading her book to enjoy the fireplace and the aroma of her tea.
