Generations stretch
Ribbon candy colors with
Herculean strength.
I'm honored to be part of this poster series featuring local businesses. Hercules Candy Company has been around for over a century making their delicious candy by hand.
Years ago I went on a tour of their facility. The memory of the candy being made sparked an idea to write this haiku on 'stretching.' This one word refers to both the ribbon candy being stretched and the multiple generations who have been a part of the company.
My name is Tyler B. Hill, I grew up around Syracuse, residing on the Onondaga Reservation. Growing up I could always remember the original Hercules Candies commercials playing on the TV. Watching hands create ribbon candy and displaying their collection of chocolate characters for the holiday season. That was a piece of nostalgia living in Syracuse, New York. So, when presented with the chance to create a poster about their store, it was an easy selection.
My process is done by hand drawing each item individually in pencil, followed by inking for a definite line. Next, I upload my linework digitally and using the computer I can assemble my drawings into place and begin to add color. For this poster I arranged my candy drawings to create a dancing pattern in the background and duplicated them. The candy makers, one dressed in white, represents the past, and the other in more vibrant colors representing the future, as they both pull taffy, giving a literal depiction to the poem: “Foundations stretch.”
