Canada geese stay,
Robins and goldfinches rest—
Climate migrates north
I grew up exploring the woods and fields, more comfortable in nature's honest presence than in the confusing pretentions of society.
After frustrating attempts to practice ecological land planning, I belatedly discovered the joys of expressing my feelings for nature's strengths and vulnerabilities in sculptural installations built into outdoor sites, and in poetry and essays.
In nearly fifty years, living in Central New York, changing visitors to local bird feeders and landscapes have emerged as our winters become milder. This haiku comments on our devastating challenges to nature's resilience, with a whimsical image of short-term adaptations.
I enjoy illustrating stories and adding bits of humor in my artwork. Many years ago I worked at a summer camp which was home to a very large flock of Canadian geese. Recalling their antics as they waddled through the camp helped me create the whimsical image of the goose on ice skates.
When I selected the haiku I couldn't resist the imagery it immediately brought to my mind. Canadian geese can be fun to watch, and since Syracuse winters can be rather lengthy, I wanted to remind people to chuckle their way through to spring.
