Description

Children sleep soundly
in warm winter pajamas—
snowman guards their dreams.

The imagery for this poem came from my own experience with Syracuse winters, and I wrote the haiku one evening after a big snowstorm. My children had been playing all day in the wind and the snow, and after I put them to bed I sat down and wrote this poem.

I've submitted haiku several times before, and I've supported the Syracuse Poster Project for a few years now. In fact, during “Art on the Porches,” the Poster Project sells posters from my porch. I love the idea of art students coming together with other people from the community. There are a lot of talented people in Syracuse, and I think it's great that we can collaborate and produce something that shows pride in our city.

My goal is to write children's books when I get out of school. As a child, I was always making up stories and characters. For this piece, I wanted to convey a sleepy, whimsical feeling. I love cool colors, so I incorporated blues and purples to create a snowy, wintry atmosphere. The child is wearing dragon pajamas, alluding to the dragon constellation in the background. I wanted the child's dreams to be represented in the sky.
