Times when friends are made

It seems like I learn from my poetry. It's amazing to me how I can just write, just sit down and write my feelings and my thoughts. They're not organized or collected, but after I've written them down, I can see more clearly.

When I'm writing it's just writing for writing's sake, so to speak. Just writing about different things that I know or that I've learned about. And then, after it's all said and done, I see more deeply into it, as if I'm not the person who's writing the poetry.

Eventually, I get the idea behind the things I'm writing about, and then I'm able to formulate the poem from a better perspective. And then I wonder, How did this happen? It's almost like music, it's so mysterious. You don't know what you have inside you. You open your mouth and out comes something that you didn't know was there.

I chose this haiku specifically for the way it captures the feeling of Armory. I work downtown at Kitty Hoynes and often visit friends working at Metrosole and Specs right around the corner. We not only work, but also play downtown—making the bar hops and coffee shops all the more applicable. Armory reminds me of my home in Philadelphia.

The piece began as a line drawing intended to capture the architectural detail so characteristic of Armory. The background wash serves to add a playful flare and enhance the drawing with downtown's notorious brick reds and hunter greens.
