Lure me into their pages
I leave with arms full
Last June, I went to the library in the Galleries with my son's fifth grade class, and I thought, “Wow, what a nice library!”
We are lucky here in Syracuse. We have an independent bookstore, My Sister's Words, we have used bookstores, and we have some great libraries. One of my favorite things to do is to browse through a bookstore or library. I always leave with an armful.
I do the same thing if I'm visiting a city—visit bookstores and the library, if I can. You'll find local authors and regional books. It's a great way to catch the flavor of the city.
I usually do work in acrylic. As part of my process, I'll shoot a reference photo and scan it into the computer. Then, in Photoshop, I'll adjust the contrast and colors, print the image, and use the print as reference for a painting.
But this time I decided not to do a painting, and put more time into manipulating the image digitally.
I still feel I did all the work by hand, just using a different medium.
I spent the same amount of time on it that I would have if I were painting it. It still looks like my work, like the way I distorted the buildings. It's a worm's eye view from several angles at once. That makes the image dramatic.
